We're teaming up with Underpants Up! and we couldn't be more thrilled!
A bit of info:
Underpants Up! collects life's basic necessities for people living in Ottawa shelters. Started by Kate Headley in September 2011, the goal of the Underpants Up! project is to collect new underpants for people living in Ottawa shelters. What might seem like a given to many of us, is a luxury for so many others. With your help, we can provide people with some simple, but necessary, help. The original goal was 1,017 pairs of new underpants by December 31, 2011. But shelters need a lot of support to be able to help those in need. Items such as soap, deodorant, shampoo, bus tickets and so much more are needed on a daily basis. So the Underpants Up! project is here to stay and ready to lend a helping hand!
How can you pay it forward?
You know how at PU if you buy 4 of our bar soaps, we give you the 5th one FREE? Well, instead of keeping your FREE 5th bar for yourself, during the month of March you can donate it to the Underpants Up! project. We will have a donation basket at our shop for the month as well as at any craft shows we are attending. Plus, for every bar of soap that is donated, Purple Urchin will donate a fresh new pair of underwear! Since March 8th is International Women's Day, we'll be happily donating women's underwear. You will also be able to donate new underwear or items such as soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste/brushes, and bus tickets at our shop.
I recently met with Kate after learning about Underpants Up! from Urban Craft for which we are both vendors. You can't help but love her bright and cheery personality and her inspirational drive to help! I was completely blown away with the brilliant, yet feasible, idea when I first heard about it, but also by how it was all started. Kate walks by a local shelter everyday and big-heartedly decided that she could do something to help. After hearing stories about how the concept of clean underwear is overlooked for people leaving in shelters, Underpants Up! was born. It's something so simple, so basic, but so necessary.
Help pay it forward!
