Switching to a Natural Deodorant

With deodorant consistently being linked to various types of cancers and other health risks, more and more people are switching over to natural deodorant. However, it is hard to know what to expect with a natural deodorant after a lifetime of using aluminum based deodorants and antiperspirants. Everyone has a slightly different body chemistry, so what works for some people might not work for others - so trying out a variety of natural deodorants until you find the one that's right for you is necessary. We're here to help you know what to look for! We've done some research and have made our ideal natural deodorant, however we hope that the information below can help inform your decision on which deodorant to choose.

Why should I be wary of common drugstore deodorants and antiperspirants?

There are many ingredients in common deodorants that are considered toxic to humans. One of the most common ingredients are aluminum based compounds. Aluminum is used in antiperspirants and is what clogs your pores and prevents you from sweating. Parabens are also a common ingredient in deodorant, used as a preservative. Aluminum, along with parabens, are linked to breast and prostate cancers because of the effect they have on your body's ability to process estrogen levels.

What ingredients should I look out for when buying a natural deodorant?

Some natural deodorants may be natural, however they may still have ingredients that aren't necessarily safe. The ingredients listed below are ones to look out for while deciding what is the best option for you:

  • Talcum Powder - While it is a useful ingredient to absorb moisture and reduce friction, talcum powder has been linked to ovarian and lung cancers.
  • Propylene Glycol - is a synthetic organic compound used in some natural deodorants. It is also an ingredient in antifreeze and methods of handling and disposal could also suggest that it is a harmful substance.
  • Baking Soda - This is used in the majority of natural deodorants, because it is so effective in odor neutralization. However, for those of you with sensitive skin, it can be an irritant and cause a burning sensation.

What makes Pitster special?
