PART-TIME OPERATIONS POSITION
We are excited to announce we’ll be expanding our production team!
We’re looking for a detail-oriented, focused Soap Maker/Production Assistant who prides themselves in their ability to do their job well when given full autonomy. Of course, we’ll provide training. But once confident in your ability to make our products well, we’ll leave you to it - using your time management skills to follow our production calendar.
It’s important the individual we hire isn’t afraid to get dirty, and comfortable being on their feet all day. The Soap Maker/Production Assistant position is a physically demanding job. We are looking for who is confident in their strength to move heavy equipment - such as our large pots of soap mixtures (which are large, full pots of oil), assist with receiving shipments (unloading palettes of ingredients), and consistently takes initiative to keep our production facility clean and organized.
Our production facility is near Ramsayville (off of Hunt Club road) and is not easily accessible by public transportation. Additionally, we may require assistance with drop offs to our store or wholesale suppliers. It is important that applicants have a valid G2 or G drivers licence and reliable transportation.
Job Type: Part-time, 15-30 hrs/week most of the year, up to 40 hours a week leading up until Christmas time.
Salary: $14.00 /hour to start
Starting date: Mid August 2020

Purple Urchin is a clean beauty maker. We make bath, body and skincare products with natural ingredients that are low-impact to the environment. All of our products are made here in Ottawa at our production facility (where you'll be working). Our storefront is located in the Glebe, where we sell our full line of products and fulfill online orders. The Production Assistant will be working at our production facility near Ramsayville (just off of Hunt Club).

WHAT WILL YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LOOK LIKE?
MAKING BAR AND LIQUID SOAP
We will teach you all the ins and outs of how to make our products. The process of making soap involves several steps, such as preparing instruments and equipment, accurately measuring ingredients - being completely focused on the task at hand, ensuring no step is skipped or detail overlooked, and most importantly ensuring all equipment and space is thoroughly cleaned after use. Provided with recipes and training materials, you’ll quickly become comfortable making different types of bar soap.
Our goal is to enable the Soap Maker/Production Assistant with thorough training to ensure they can begin working autonomously at the warehouse. The role will require the individual to be able to manage their time well, following Purple Urchin’s high demand production schedule. The role requires the individual to be able to diligently manage inventory of both ingredients and product made. The purpose of this is to ensure our production team can project an ordering schedule for ingredients. Additionally, be able to provide our retail team with accurate timelines as to when they can expect restock for the store or products to fulfill wholesale orders.
ASSISTING PRODUCTION LEAD
As Soap Maker/Production Assistant, once you’ve mastered soap making (within 3-6 months), you’ll be called upon to assist in making some of our other products, which will include becoming comfortable with our shrink wrap and labelling machinery.
The role is physically demanding, requiring the individual to be confident in their ability to lift up to 50 lbs to table height, up to 40 lbs overhead, and move both equipment and ingredients at receiving. Our team will ensure proper lifting training is provided, following all health and safety regulations - ensuring your safety is at top of mind. Due to the physical demands required of the position, it is important you are able to lift and bend throughout the day, are comfortable on your feet and do not mind being in a highly scented (smell) facility.
In addition to making products, the Production Assistant will be responsible for cleaning and organizing the warehouse, which includes but is not limited to washing dishes and equipment, ensuring a clean and safe working space (both throughout the day and at the end of each shift), taking out the garbage, and tending to common areas such as the bathroom. Part of your role may be full days dedicated to cleaning and organizing the warehouse - thorough cleaning and re-organization for workflow improvements.
WHAT DAYS AND HOURS WILL YOU WORK?
The position will start off as a part-time position. If training is completed successfully and the employee demonstrates the ability to complete tasks according to the job’s specifications, full-time hours may be offered. We will require weekend availability for this position.
WHAT CAN YOU BRING TO THE TABLE?
- Proven experience to be able to maintain focus, engagement, accuracy, and speed while while managing multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proven experience with and maintaining small machinery and knowledge of hand tools and how to use them correctly
- Past experience, proving ability to follow detailed instructions, both verbal and written
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must have valid G2 or G drivers licence and reliable transportation, as public transit is limited at certain times of the day
