Our Environmental Sustainability Initiatives
A concern for the environment plays a role in every decision we make. It informs everything from the ingredients we choose to how we package our products. We want to ensure that when a product is being washed down the drain it does not negatively affect the earth. That's why all of our products are made with natural ingredients! When using ingredients from mother nature, it's important that in return we don't harm her.
WHAT ARE OUR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES?
NO PRODUCT GOES TO WASTE
Purple Urchin streamlines our environmental values through every aspect of our business. In addition to making eco-friendly products, we don’t let any of the extra from our batches go to waste. When we make our bar soap, we cut each bar into perfect rectangles, which we sell as individual bars. Any leftover soap that is not shaped to our aesthetic standards or too small is weighed out into bulk packs (650 G) and sold for a reduced price ($25.99). These are what we refer to as soap butts. Any other thinner pieces from our bar soap batches are brought to our shop and provided as soap samples for customers to take when shopping in-store, and added in with each online order.
We’re perfectionists when it comes to the quality, performance and appearance of our products. If any of our batches of soap don’t turn out exactly as we want them to, we donate them to those in need. It’s important to us to give back to our community where we can.
When we make our products, if we have any spare leftovers it doesn’t go in the trash. We add these into samplers for customers. We include these samplers in online orders and available for free at our store. We love that this sustainability initiative ensures we don’t create more waste, and we provide our customers with the opportunity to test out our products.
GIVING YOU THE OPTION TO GO GREEN
We want to encourage our customers to move their eco-friendly initiatives forward. Purple Urchin now offers customers the option to buy our bar soap without packaging. We refer to bar soap without packaging as “naked soap”. Our packaged soap is still available for those of you who are buying gifts or who simply prefer to have packaged soap.
REDUCING PLASTIC AND INTRODUCING REUSABLE, REFILLABLE BOTTLES
Each year, our team evaluates how we can improve our environmental sustainability practices. This year our team identified how we can further reduce our environmental impact by offering reusable and biodegradable containers and packaging. Our team has identified new suppliers and we are working towards implementing more environmentally friendly packaging.
At our physical shop, we want to encourage customers to use reusable containers. That’s why Purple Urchin will be rolling out a refill program at our store. Unfortunately our some of our 2020 Environmental Sustainability Initiatives have been put on pause due to COVID-19.
IMPROVING OUR BEST PRACTICES AS A BUSINESS
We understand there are still many aspects of our business, and all businesses, that can impact the environment. For example, shipping online orders contributes to the release of gas emissions. Our team offers in-store pickup and will be offering curbside pickup to customers. We want to do what we can, where we can to reduce our impact on the environment. Our team is always looking for ways to improve our practices within our operations.
WE VALUE CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
Purple Urchin is always open to feedback and genuinely appreciates hearing from our customers. Leave us a message below with any further suggestions you may have on how our team can improve our environmental sustainability practices.
